What Your Third Grader Will Learn This Year

Third grade students will learn the following concepts and ideas by the end of the school year:

Reading

  • Identifies main idea and supporting details
  • Distinguishes between fact and opinion
  • Recognizes cause and effect
  • Draws conclusions
  • Sequence events
  • Identify author’s purpose and story structure
  • Identify types of literature
  • Identify theme in fiction and nonfiction
  • Writes short and extended responses for questions
  • Summarizes stories; and compares and contrasts
  • Makes inferences and predictions
  • Develops vocabulary knowledge
  • Build reading fluency

Social Studies

  • Understand the significance of the past and its influence on the present.
  • Be mindful of both change and continuity in our lives.
  • Understand the rights & responsibilities of citizens
  • Understand where and why communities originate
  • Explore the effects of technology within communities
  • Understand how communities do business, local and state government
  • Recognize the personal character traits of people who have made a difference in history.
  • Read various types of information effectively while learning to ask appropriate questions to distinguish fact from conjecture.
  • Research information using a variety of sources and communicate effectively.

Writing

  • Students will use the writing process to write narrative and expository essays.

Math

  • Number Sense, Concepts & Operations (equivalent numbers, place value, number grids addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fact families, fractions, decimals, percent, number stories)
  • Data and Probability (range, median, mode, mean, tally charts, reading and analyzing graph data, probability)
  • Measurement (weight, money, time, temperature, perimeter, area, diameter, circumference, and angle measurement)
  • Geometry (line of symmetry, congruency, spatial relationship, reflections, flips, turns, and coordinate grids)

Science

  • Life Science (structures and characteristics of plants and animals, plants and animals respond to changing seasons, plants make their own food, and plants and animals interact and depend on each other)
  • Earth and Space Science (seasonal changes, changes in the night sky, and composition and structure of the surface of the Earth)
  • Physical Science ( properties of matter, changes in matter, forms of energy)
