Media Center

Media Center

The media center is the heart of our school. Students use the Media Center to check out textbooks, use computers, and, of course, borrow books for the enjoyment of reading. Faculty and staff use the center for training. The center also houses the teacher work area, which includes poster makers, display board tools, and videos & DVDs.

  Accelerated Reader (AR)
Accelerated Reader is a program in which students read books, take self-directed computerized tests to check comprehension, and then earn points based on questions answered correctly. After a child has read an AR book, he or she may take a test on the title. Based on the length and complexity of the book and the number of correct answers given students can earn points toward their AR Gol. As students reach a goal they are rewarded with a prize.
To find AR books in the media center, look for books with the AR level on the spine. To find out if a book at home has an AR test, just go to find AR books in the media center, look for books with the AR level on the spine. To find out if a book at home has an AR test, just go to

Battle of the Books Club and Competition
This year Forsyth Woods Elementary will participate for the first time in Orange County’s Battle of the Books Competition.  Students read as many books from the current Sunshine State list as they can during the year and then demonstrate their knowledge of the books through team-based, game show style competition. Preparation for competition requires dedication and commitment. In February, students will compete for a place on our competition team. Only five (5) students plus one (1) alternate will be selected for the final competition team. The final team will compete against teams from other East Area elementary schools in the Battle of the Books competition in May.
So, to prepare for this event, we are forming a Battle of the Books Club.  The purpose of this club is to encourage high quality and high quantity reading among our students as well as foster individual pride and teamwork. This year the club will be available to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders.  The club will meet Wednesday mornings from 8:10 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. in the Media Center. Students will have the opportunity to read the books, take AR quizzes on the books, write questions from the books and quiz each other on their knowledge. Students should ultimately plan on being an “expert” on at least three (3) of the Sunshine State books.

The program has 8 subjects related to Math and Reading. The students have to take a diagnostic quiz before using each subject. Students can earn more time on the cool stuff like games, when they complete problems.
